James Paul Gee is an American investigator who partakes in psycholinguistics, dialogues analysis, bilingual education, and literacy.  James Gee is a professional presidential professor of literacy studies at Arizona State University (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, and 10 Apr. 2018).

This article deliberates how children can either learn through reading words such as books and computers. As well, he discusses how popular culture and video games can be added to our literacy. Children reading words through books cannot be easy for children. James discusses how important is it for children able to understand and read instructions through video games. Most teachers believe children will not learn any language through video games but in books. However, it is important for children to learn vocabulary in early stages. Therefore, it will help with oral language and skills. In the article, James discussed how the mother and the child discuss the egg.  The mother asked the child “what is an egg?”  The child looked back at his mother and said it’s an egg.  The mother responded back and said, “How did you actually know?” The child responded and said, “Because it looks like an egg.” The mother said, “How did you figure it out?” “Was it in your video game?”  The child knew in the video game and how the claw looked like.  When a child plays a video game with literacy words, they will understand by reading instructions on how the game worked. Video games teach young adults to understand instructions and problem-solving.  Young children communicate with each other by face to face or through video games. Therefore, video games can be significant because children often are in groups of 4 in a video game or in person.  It will help the children to be in groups by improving their communication by chatting online.  Back in the day, Yu-gi-oh cards were very popular for children.  Therefore, it was either played online or in person. It helped the children to communicate with each other and able to problem solve.  Video games help children to understand how the game works. Video games teach kids to overcome their fear of losing and despite. Likewise, Video games allow children to become freer and to explore many situations. In addition, it will help their literacy skills to read instructions and to know what tools can be used.

One of the main points in this article talks about how essential it is for kids to play video games and understand how it works. On page 317 paragraph 7, discuss how children can learn by reading the instructions and able to problem solve (James Paul Gee, 2008).  Therefore, Yu-gi-oh cards are the most popular game and easy to learn either online or in person. James discusses how yu-gi-oh cards can help children to understand and how the game work. By improving the lucidly functional language. Therefore, the description in the cards teaches children how to use the card in a different situation. I agree in the agreement on how the cards can be used in any way such as, in pokemon cards. Back in the day when I was younger, I used to play with pokemon cards in groups of 4. It helped me to understand how to use the card. This way it helped me to improve on my reading and how to use the card. It teaches me how to read and how to spell. Playing video games have a lot of effect on children because it will help them on how to use their reading skills. As well to use in real life situations.

The second point in this article discusses how video games affect children. Video games affect children by helping their cognitive skills become stronger. If the children are having problems in a game, they can figure out what solutions to use in the game. Likewise, the game of Mario.  It teaches children what characters can be used and what tools are available.  In this point, I agree because I used to play Nintendo and spend hours problem-solving in each level. In addition, I spend hours exploring and learning to achieve to the next level of the game. It helped me to become more successful. They always say if you fail you can always succeed in the end.  Many say practice always makes perfect. By practicing I became more confident and able to take risks in games. It was very difficult for me to achieve levels.  I explored many different situations and able to finish all levels. Video games allowed children to take risks and to explore many situations and able to solve in life situations.

The last important point was discussed when James talked about how he had forgotten his game. Therefore, he was frustrated reading the booklet and he did not want to play the game. James wanted to leave his game in his closet. Video games help children explore and not read the book. James discussed how he wanted to just play the game and to explore the game. Reading the booklet could be good, however, it can be very confusing.  Many people say playing the game can be much easier than reading on how to play. It will help the children to explore and to learn on their own. Therefore, it can help the children to understand how the game works. I agree to this because when I was younger, I did not read the instructions and started to explore. It helped me to improve my cognitive skills and able to figure out the controller. The first time playing Mario on Nintendo was very hard. Therefore, I did not know which button to use on the controller to make the character to jump.
